POST-OP THERAPY

A major part of the successful outcome following surgical procedures is good physiotherapy treatment concentrating on:

  • restoring optimal mobility

  • strengthening weakened and dis-used muscles

  • compensation for any functional loss

  • restoring normal movement patterns and habits

Orthopaedic procedures:

We are happy to see clients before or after planned orthopaedic procedures such as:

  • Shoulder surgery - arthroscopy, tendon or ligament repairs, decompressions, joint replacement, fracture management, acromioclavicular joint repair

  • Hip - arthroscopy, labral repair, joint replacement, injections

  • Knee - ligament, cartilage or tendon repair, arthroscopy, injection, joint replacement

  • Spinal - fusions, stabilisations, discectomy, injections

  • Ankle - arthroscopy, ligament repair, joint replacement

  • Foot - bunion and toe surgery, fracture management

It is often helpful to see us before your surgery to ensure that you are familiar with what exercises you will be doing immediately post-surgery. I can also assess what your movement and requirements are that can help with goal-setting for your post-surgery rehabilitation.

Many operative procedures benefit from having you at your very best or strongest prior to the surgery as much as possible and can help enormously with your post-operative rehabilitation.

If you have any queries regarding your specific planned procedure and whether I can help you please call

VESTIBULAR THERAPY

Physiotherapy treatment for BPPV is very effective and involves specific head and body movements to assist in the movement of the crystals withn the inner ear.  The direction of movement will depend on the affected ear side. The manoeuvre lasts approximately 3-5 minutes and will be repeated 2-4 times during your appointment.  Symptoms are often aggravated by the treatment but by the end of your first session you will feel considerably better.  On average a patient will only require 1-2 treatments for symptoms to resolve.

ELECTROTHERAPY

ELECTROTHERAPY

Electrical stimulation for pain control was used in ancient Rome, 63 A.D. It was reported by Scribonius Largus that pain was relieved by standing on an electrical fish at the seashore.  From the 16th to 18th centuries various electrostatic devices were used for headaches and other pains.  Even Benjamin Franklin was a supporter of this method for pain relief.
Electrotherapy uses electrical signals to interfere with the transmission of neural pain signals into the brain. It effectively slows down or distracts the message from the nerve to the brain.  From a physiotherapy point of view, affecting one’s ‘Pain Gate’, whether in an acute or chronic pain episode is a crucial area of treatment and electrotherapy is a very useful resource where conventional medicines are not as effective.  Electrotherapy can also involve the use of this electric current to speed tissue healing where tissue damage has also occurred.
